1. Why take an interest in consumption?

An embedded system can be defined as an autonomous electronic and computer system, dedicated to a specific task. Its available resources are generally limited. This limitation is generally spatial (limited size) and energetic (restricted power consumption). Power consumption is therefore a new design constraint for embedded systems.

1.1 Circuit evolution

Figure 1 shows the power range of different electronic systems, from nano-watts to hundreds of watts. Clearly, strategies will vary from one field to another.
