2. "Memory wall

The memory wall is the result of differences in the performance of processors and DRAM memories.

2.1 DRAM access times

As shown in figure 1 , from 1980 to 2010, processor performance increased by 60% per year, while DRAM performance increased by only 7% (latency) and 20% (throughput). The improvement in processor performance then slowed to around 20%. However, the gap continues to widen.
