5. Focus on the F22 Raptor

Table 4 summarizes the F22 specifications.

The F22 Raptor (figure 41 ) was designed to provide air superiority, i.e. control of the airspace in which it is engaged, by taking advantage of stealth: the ability to see without being seen in order to shoot down an adversary first. The F117, a simple bomber, was unable to meet these specifications, and the F15 became obsolete.

To achieve this objective, we had to start from a more conventional aircraft: the F117 made a stealth aircraft fly, the F22 made a high-performance fighter stealthy.
