1. Characteristic properties of clutter

The detection volume of a radar is limited by the presence of undesirable echoes, caused by atmospheric disturbances such as clouds, rain or snow, or by the reflection of waves on the ground or sea.

These disruptive echoes are referred to as "clutter", the French equivalent of the more recent term fouillis.

We'll be hearing about atmospheric clutter, sea clutter and soil clutter.

In the course of this study, we will attempt to define :

  • volumes, or surfaces, of clutter intercepted by radar ;

  • the equivalent unit surface areas of the clutter η or σ 0 , which will be expressed in m 2 /m ...
