ABSTRACT

The MPEG-4 standard is complex. At the level of the video coding, it offers two sets of coding tools, one providing an objects approach and the other allowing for an extremely efficient debit reduction. The  Advanced Video Coding is an improvement of the video coding. However, the MPEG-4 is not only an audio and video coding standard. It defines systems for the design, composition, distribution and use of the various media objects. Various applications in the field of the multimedia production and transport have thus been made possible.

 INTRODUCTION

The previous [TE 5 365] file presented the basic coding used for audio and video bitrate reduction in the MPEG-4 standard. This new dossier presents an enhancement to video coding, Advanced Video Coding, which makes up Part 10 of the standard. But MPEG-4 is more than just an audio and video coding standard. It defines systems for the creation, composition, distribution and use of different media objects. This enables a wide range of applications in multimedia production and transport.

Many terms and the text of certain figures have been kept in English, to facilitate reading and use of the standard documents.

A glossary defining over 80 terms, used in the series of documents in this dossier, is given in [ ].
