8. Conclusion

HEVC/H.265 seems to be meeting its objectives of halving bitrates compared with AVC/H.264, for equivalent image quality. Its deployment in broadcast and moving image production will be faster than that of H.264 in its day. It will very probably be the key to the development of video broadcasting services on the Internet, enabling players like YouTube to offer visual quality as good as that currently broadcast in HD on traditional broadcast networks. HEVC/H.265 will also be the means by which UHD ("4K" then "8K") will be broadcast.

This article could not have been written without the numerous works and publications of the researchers and engineers who contributed to the HEVC/H.265 standard. We would like to thank them all.

Our special thanks to Jacques JOUHANEAU, for his careful proofreading and corrections....
