2.1 From analog audio-visual to digital and IT
Digitization of audio, photo and video media results in a time-discontinuous, number-coded representation of the physical quantity (e.g. the colored light of a captured image, or the acoustic vibration of a sound). This number, made up of binary digits 0 or 1, is then translated into a 2-level electrical signal (low or high), which can be recorded on a magnetic tape (digital VCR/recorder or computer recorder) or on a magnetic or optical disc (CD, DVD).
