While the development of digital radio has been made possible by audio bit-rate reduction, error detection/correction codes and their flexibility, the contribution of the COFDM digital modulation system is fundamental to terrestrial broadcasting.
COFDM is particularly well suited to the constraints of a terrestrial propagation channel. It takes into account both natural and artificial echoes created by neighboring transmitters, and can compensate for the negative effects of multipath by modulating a large number of orthogonal carriers and correcting errors. Its performance makes it ideal for high-speed mobile receivers.
Finally, COFDM offers the possibility of setting up networks or SFNs (Single Frequency Networks), thus limiting the number of channels needed to broadcast a given program over a given territory, at a time when frequency bands...
