4. IPv6 activation mechanisms

Techniques for deploying IPv6 within network infrastructures and services can be divided into two categories:

  • (1) those that enable the establishment of native IPv6 communications (i.e. IPv6 traffic exchanged between two terminals requires the routing and routing functions implemented within network infrastructures);

  • (2) those based on the (dynamic) establishment of tunnels, enabling IPv6 end-to-end communications using existing IPv4 infrastructures.
