ABSTRACT

Squid software is able to interface itself with other software and thus to dramatically increase its possibilities and offer services provided by any satisfactory application relay, such as an antivirus or URL filter in order to prevent abusive or fraudulent use of the Internet. Furthermore, companies benefiting from centralized authentication can reinforce Internet access with a controlled access system. In addition, Squid can also provide traces although difficult to process. Fortunately, other software applications can address this gap by producing more or less granular reports.

 INTRODUCTION

As we saw in the article on setting up an application relay , that Squid software has many advantages, thanks to its long history and widespread deployment. We've also seen how to set it up to offer basic HTTP, HTTPS and FTP application relay services. However, the software has many other features, some of which are worth taking advantage of.

Squid can also interface with third-party software, increasing its capabilities tenfold, and above all offering services that any application relay worthy of the name should be able to offer these days, such as antivirus filtering or URL filtering to block abusive or illegal Internet use. In addition, companies with centralized authentication (such as ActiveDirectory or LDAP) can reinforce Internet access with access control.

Finally, Squid can also provide traces, but in the end these data are no more than a series of lines, preventing easy exploitation of this information. Fortunately, third-party software can also fill this gap by producing reports of varying degrees of granularity.

These are the points we're going to cover in this article on advanced Squid use.
