4.1 History and evolution of standards
SIP was initially defined (in 1996) as part of the MBone group (establishment of IP multicast sessions). The first version of the protocol (version 1) was standardized in 1997. SIP version 2 was published in March 1999 (RFC 2543), then updated in June 2002 (RFC 3261). Numerous standards have gradually been added to the basic SIP standard
