10. IPv4 service continuity: "Lightweight IPv4 over IPv6" case study
The IETF has specified an IPv4 service continuity solution, called "Lightweight IPv4 over IPv6" . This solution consists of allocating the same IPv4 public address to several clients; these clients also receive non-overlapping port ranges.
These port ranges are used to demultiplex communications between clients sharing the same IPv4 address. The port range assigned to a client thus constitutes a unique means of identification, designed to guarantee reliable routing of return traffic to these clients.
