ABSTRACT

The connected car is a study project of global interest, with many industrial, commercial and societal issues. This application of robotics related to the transportation of people or goods stimulates electric motorization, low-latency communication systems, artificial intelligence and the creation of sensors and accessories to improve road safety and reduce nervous tension in drivers. The industry proposes several steps to achieve cohabitation of the different types of intelligent vehicles offered in a coherent way. All these innovations, though not yet completed, will have a marked impact on transport systems, legal aspects and social life.

 INTRODUCTION

Strictly speaking, a connected vehicle (CV, or E-Car) benefits from equipment that enables it to communicate by radio with road infrastructures and with other vehicles on the move. In a broader sense, the autonomous vehicle in a connected environment, or more simply, the "connected vehicle", uses available information and its own software to navigate in public or private spaces, under the supervision or without the assistance of its driver. Its autonomy of movement can be partial or total (autonomous vehicle, AV). Considered globally, a particular organization of the structure of these new vehicles can be part of a policy to reduce the number of road accidents, save energy and comply with ecological rules, in order to reduce particle pollution and the production of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) in urban areas, for example.

The Connected Vehicle (CV) project is part of a series of studies which, in addition to mobility, must also meet other objectives that are popular with the public, and which require industrial redeployment. Several CV solutions are conceivable, and for each of them, several stages can be considered, a relatively stable technical-economic balance being essential to ensure transitions. A number of self-driving connected vehicle accessories are already available today. Their widespread use can only be gradual, and in some respects requires adaptation and harmonization of the regulations in force in a large number of countries.

Depending on the type of vehicle in question, whether for utility or family use, this represents a complete transformation of the traditional road transport concept which, thanks to communications and robotics, promotes a number of societal objectives while reducing driver fatigue at the wheel.

From this vast program of studies, it is already clear that many new transport services and applications could be added to the list of projects outlined here, underpinned by indispensable international standards and regulations.
