Definitions

The ISO (International Standard Organization) has grouped network administration activities into five functional areas:

  • anomaly management ;

  • accounting management ;

  • performance management ;

  • configuration management ;

  • safety management.

These activities are also commonly classified as follows:

  • monitoring consists of supervising systems and retrieving information on their status and behavior. This can be done by periodic polling, or by unsolicited feedback from the network equipment itself. This is more akin to ISO's "anomaly management" and "performance management" activities;...
