3. Outlook

3.1 SNMP

The SNMPv3 standard provides a precise framework for administration, with sufficient scope for integrating any extensions that may be required, such as new security models.

SNMP's current developments therefore focus more on the MIB, which is gradually being enriched by new modules:

  • to support Internet standards (for example, DSMON is the RMON MIB for diffserv);

  • to extend beyond the network to application or system services (RFC 2591: Definitions of Managed Objects for Scheduling Management Operations, RFC 2287: Definitions of System-Level Managed Objects for Applications, RFC 2594: Definitions of Managed Objects for WWW Services, etc.);
