ABSTRACT

Lightning strikes and adverse weather conditions regularly and inevitably perturb power grids. This can impact the sustainability of the material and the quality of the service and has led network managers to implement systems and processes to correct faults in order to ensure at best the transportation of electricity. This article presents the protection schemes that have been implemented, i.e. the protection systems of every work within the network and their coordination. The physical supports for the protection of telecommunication systems are also detailed. To conclude, the various processes for the automatic resetting of the network are explained.

 INTRODUCTION

This dossier is part of a series on "Protection of transmission and distribution networks".

After the [D 4 800v2] "Presentation" file, the following points were addressed in the [D 4 801] "Protection of transmission and distribution networks against short-circuits and insulation faults" file:

  • performance and constraints imposed on protection systems by different types of network;

  • presentation of the internationally accepted protection classification ;

  • reminder of the influence of transients on protection behavior.

In the [D 4 802] file "Protection of transmission and distribution lines and cables", the following points were addressed:

  • description of measurement principles for relays dedicated to overhead lines ;

  • description of measurement principles for relays dedicated to underground cables.

In the [D 4 803] file "Protection of busbars and transformers, the contribution of digital techniques", the following points were addressed:

  • description of protection principles and relays particularly suited to busbar structures ;

  • description of measurement principles for relays dedicated to transformers ;

  • contribution and interest of digital techniques for protection relays and substation control.

This document describes the various ways in which this equipment can be combined in systems and plans to achieve the desired...
