1.1 Power grid: role and complexity

The role of the grid is to deliver non-storable electrical energy to where it's needed, when it's needed.

A large number of structures are required to maintain a high quality of service at all times, and at the lowest overall cost. In France, there are three main types of network.

  • A powerful interconnection network serves :

    • on the one hand, to transport large quantities of energy over long distances, from producing areas to consuming areas;

    • secondly, to compensate for an accidental production shortfall in a zone, thanks to interconnection. In 1996, this network comprised 20,780 km of 400 kV lines...
