4. Concrete based on plastic foams or synthetic resins

For some years now, very light concretes have been appearing on the market, using plastics as binders. Some have been developed and used extensively, notably in the field of single-family homes. Others, on the other hand, have remained on the drawing-board, or have been patented without follow-up.

4.1 Lightweight concretes based on plastic foams

These materials, commonly referred to as "concretes", are in fact filled foams. Until a few years ago, plastic foams were mainly used as insulation rather than structural materials. However, some of them have considerable mechanical resistance.
