6.1 Terminology

Figure 7 illustrates the terminology used in smoke control rules.

Barrier screen – Vertical separation placed under the roof or high floor to prevent the lateral flow of smoke and combustion gases.

Pipes or equipment may pass through the enclosure screens with the necessary clearance tolerance.

Smoke extraction curtain wall – Free volume between the bottom floor and the top floor or roof, bounded by the smoke extraction curtain walls.

Surface area of a smoke extraction section – Surface area obtained by horizontally projecting the volume of the section.
