6. Conforming reliefs

6.1 Waterproofing's weak point: upstands

Careful installation of new reliefs is of the utmost importance. According to insurance company statistics, waterproofing upstands are the most frequent cause of damage to flat roofs.

To protect the upstands from UV rays, it is imperative to use bituminous membranes dressed with gravel, tinted or not, slate flakes, or 8/100th-thick metal sheets in aluminum or copper.

Details: a new relief must be created, either to replace the existing one, or to double the relief retained. After repair, the relief must be fitted with a device that complies with current standards and protects the head against the ingress of water.
