 INTRODUCTION

Air traffic has been rising steadily for several years now. This can be explained by the fall in ticket prices, the arrival and growth of low-cost airlines, the growing range of destinations and the reduction in connecting times.

This trend also depends on events affecting international civil aviation. Following the events of September 11, 2001, international air traffic plummeted by over 10%, driving several airlines into bankruptcy.

Traffic trends are therefore closely linked to air transport safety.

On the one hand, when traffic increases or connecting times are reduced, safety installations, resources and procedures must be able to adapt. Their necessary scalability must be taken into account right from the design stage.

On the other hand, passengers expect the transport they choose to be safe. Any shortcomings in safety (or security) measures have an enormous influence on the image and hence the economic conditions of air transport.
