3. Geometric characteristics in running section

The geometry of a road in a running section is fundamentally characterized by three concepts which we will explain in this section:

  • cross-section ;

  • Longitudinal profile ;

  • plan layout.

3.1 Cross-section

This is a cross-section of the roadway and its appurtenances.

The nomenclature of terms used is shown in figure 1 for freeways and single carriageways.
