 INTRODUCTION

Although the term "unitary process" is no longer used to refer to the main treatment involved, the notion of a unitary process nevertheless remains valid in terms of the principles involved: oxidation is still oxidation, adsorption is still adsorption, and so on.

In the case of the treatment of water intended for human consumption, we have used this term to mean :

  • chemical oxidation, with major applications for chlorine compounds and ozone;

  • adsorption, and in particular the development of activated carbons;

  • biological treatments, which are indeed the result of oxidation, reduction, etc., but with very specific characteristics;

  • ion exchange ;

  • Membrane separations are grouped together here, although they use different principles, including osmotic pressure;

  • ultraviolet treatments.

These unit processes apply to naturally very clear or clarified water. in advance.

The art of water treatment lies in choosing the right processes and integrating them into a high-performance chain that is as economical as possible.

The complete study of the subject includes the articles :

  • C 5 198 - Distribution water. Purpose of treatment ;

  • C 5 199 - Distribution water. Clarification ;

  • C 5 200 - Distribution water. Unitary treatment (this article) ;

  • C 5 201 - Supply water. Specific treatments.
