INTRODUCTION
The design of an airfield must comply with rules based on the standards and recommendations of the International Civil Aviation Organization. This design, whether intended for passenger transport and/or other activities, must meet the needs expressed by these activities (volume and type of traffic, regularity of service), while taking into account the related constraints (first and foremost, the safety and movement of aircraft and people, and secondly, consideration and protection of the environment, etc.).
This article presents the various aspects of aerodrome design, from a functional, technical and administrative point of view, with reference to the Instruction technique sur les aérodromes civils (ITAC), the French guide to aerodrome layout.
This article is part of a series of documents devoted to aerodromes:
— Aerodromes. Description and classification ;
— Airfields. Design [C 4 451] ;
— Aerodromes. Local data taken into account ;
— Airfields. Construction ;
