ABSTRACT

This article deals with the design of joints frequently used in steel-concrete composite frames. It shows how to determine the frictional torque and rotational stiffness of joints, emphasizing the basic components that should be added to those in steel joints. A classification of the joints by strength and stiffness should also be related to the type of global analysis of the frame so that appropriate modeling of joints can be defined. Finally, two worked examples are given for illustration purposes.

 INTRODUCTION

Design methods for composite beams are described in detail in the [C 2 561] and [C 2 568] files, and those for composite columns in the [C 2 562] file.

The calculation of connections between floor beams and framing beams and columns is dealt with here, based on a very general method known as the "component method", introduced and detailed for steel connections in the EN 1993-1-8 (clause 6.1.3), then generalized to mixed assemblies in the EN 1994-1-1 (Section 8 and Appendix A).

The basic components of steel connections are assumed to be known here. Firstly, they include fasteners such as welds, tensioned bolts, sheared bolts, diametral pressure bolts, etc., described in detail in [C 2 520] , [C 2 521] and [C 2 522] .
