2. Carbon fibers

While the first carbon fiber was invented and produced by T. Edison (using the pyrolysis of bamboo fibers for use in an incandescent lamp), the first experimental uses date back to the 1960s, and the first industrial units only appeared in the early 1970s with the introduction of polyacrylonitrile as a precursor fiber.

2.1 Carbon fiber properties

Carbon fibres have unrivalled characteristics and extensive physical properties:

  • high strength and high modulus of elasticity in longitudinal tension ;

  • high resistance to fatigue and deformation ;

  • low density ;
