3.1 Classification

There are different ways of classifying insulation.

3.1.1 Depending on their origin

Animal or plant origin. For thermal insulation, only cork is sometimes used, and more rarely compounds based on wood fibers and shavings. These materials are sensitive to the risk of fire, which is strongly discouraged in industrial applications.

Mineral origin. These include glass or rock mineral wools, glass fibers, silicates, ceramics, cellular glass, perlite...
