4. Rotary coolers

The rotary cooler is the oldest clinker cooling system installed on rotary kilns.

Mechanically simple (figure 16 ), it presents two process difficulties when used on high-capacity furnaces:

  • candle formation at the clinker chute on the inlet side;

  • fluctuating air velocity in the lift zone.

The first of these problems can be solved by using a water-cooled chute or by equipping the chute with an automatic ringing (cleaning) system, while the second can be solved by increasing the diameter of the tube between its two tyres.
