3.1 Technology
Balloon or planetary coolers (figure 14 ) first appeared on long furnaces in the 1920s, based on the technology of rotary coolers. In the late 1960s, they were updated and developed as an alternative to grate coolers as a cooling system on short furnaces with cyclone preheaters (cf. § 2.4
