The geopolitics of renewable energies differs fundamentally from the geopolitics of hydrocarbons. In the case of hydrocarbons, the geopolitics of renewable energies are linked to the extensive trade in oil and natural gas between producing and consuming countries. In the case of renewable energies, on the other hand, most energy is produced and consumed locally. Renewable energies are largely used to generate electricity. Electricity is difficult and costly to transport over long distances. It can be transported from one country to another, when there is an interconnected network, as is the case for the countries of the European Union, but it is much more difficult over very long distances or from one continent to another.

For this reason, renewable energies are generally produced and consumed locally.
