9.1 Asia's place
Asia accounts for almost 40% of the world's total renewable energy consumption. However, in the APAC region, renewables account for just 10% of electricity generation, far behind coal (58%), hydropower (14%) and natural gas (11%).
With 60% of the world's population and a very large share of the world's industrial production, Asia is very concerned by greenhouse gas emissions, local pollution and the damage caused by industrial production, such as the production of rare earths. Most electricity is currently generated by coal-fired power plants. The energy transition, by limiting or curbing the use of coal, which will be replaced by renewable energies and in part by natural gas, will help reduce this pollution.
