Asia and Europe are heavily dependent on imports of fossil fuels, oil and gas.

Asia (figure 12 ) consumes 35 million barrels of oil a day, and produces just 8 million barrels. China, India and Japan are by far the world's biggest oil importers. Japan and China are also the world's biggest importers of natural gas.
