8.1 Some simple solutions in plane geometry
Many radiation problems can be formulated by restricting ourselves to a single dimension of space (transfer in atmospheric layers, in a sheet of glass or through porous plates, especially in the case of insulators, etc.). This approach assumes that gradients are zero in all directions other than perpendicular to the plane of the wall. The radiative transfer equation then reduces to (see note 20, equation (65) ):
