1. Semi-transparent media
The semi-transparent nature of a material depends on its ability to let photons penetrate more or less deeply before absorbing or scattering them.
– If this penetration is (very) low compared to the dimensions of the medium studied, the latter will be considered optically thick, or even opaque: the radiation will eventually be limited to a surface phenomenon
– Conversely, if photons can pass through the medium without being absorbed (or only in very small numbers), the medium will be considered optically thin, or even transparent....
