1. Transport: flows and risks

1.1 Flow

Millions of dangerous goods packages are transported every year in France. Regulations divide these packages into different risk "classes". Class 1, for example, corresponds to explosive materials and objects, class 3 to flammable liquids, and class 6 to toxic or infectious materials. Class 7 corresponds to radioactive dangerous goods. Around 900,000 packages of radioactive substances are transported every year.

The nuclear industry accounts for only around 15% of the annual flow of radioactive substance shipments: 85% of packages transported are destined for the healthcare, non-nuclear industry or research sectors, known as "local nuclear", including around 30% for the medical sector alone.
