3.1 Programs

In most countries, the reference solution for the management of high-level long-lived waste is deep geological disposal. This is more or less the result of a consensus on safety and ethical aspects among stakeholders. Host rocks are chosen according to the geological potential of the countries concerned. All countries have experienced major delays in the development of their disposal programs, mainly due to a lack of social acceptance. Those who have carried out the project with prior debate and consultation are the most advanced. The nuclear waste eligible for disposal in each country depends on whether all or part of the spent fuel is reprocessed at home or abroad. Canada, Finland and Sweden wish to store spent fuel assemblies, as does the USA (for the time being);...
