3. Conclusion

The development of nuclear power plants has profoundly altered the needs to which special steels had to provide solutions, requiring the development of extremely precise and consistent manufacturing methods and high-performance products.

The development of nitrogen-controlled stainless steels, which offer both high mechanical properties and excellent corrosion resistance, is an example of improved product performance combined with a quality that was previously unthinkable.

The transfer of knowledge from basic research to applied research, and from applied research to industrial production on the shop floor, was a key factor in the success of this collective effort.
