1. The plant and its design

1.1 Situation at the TMI-2 power plant

The Three Mile Island power plant is located in Pennsylvania, USA, on the Susquehanna River, 16 km downstream of Harrisburg, the state capital and city of 90,000 (figure 1 ). It comprises two adjacent but physically separate pressurized water reactor (PWR) units of Babcock and Wilcox design.
