4. Passive dosimeters
The detector does not require any power source to operate. The measurement result represents the integrated dose corresponding to the dosimeter's exposure period. It can only be known after the exposure period.
Today, operating procedures are usually automated by laboratories, and receive particular attention in terms of quality assurance. However, interpreting results, particularly in the event of an accident, remains a delicate task and relies on the know-how of a limited number of experts.
Many passive dosimetry badges use several different passive dosimetry techniques. They include, for example, several film emulsions with various screenings, one or more radiophotoluminescent (RPL) or thermoluminescent elements (screened or unscreened) and possibly activatable elements for criticality dosimetry....
