1.1 Photoelectrochemical cell operating principle
The photoelectrolysis of water consists in dissociating water in two half-reactions. Hydrogen is produced by reduction, the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) at the photocathode (Equation (1) ), and oxygen is generated at the photoanode by oxidation (Equation (2) ), the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The overall reaction is given by Equation (3) .
