 INTRODUCTION

Polymer welding is just as much a part of the assembly process as gluing or mechanical assembly techniques such as clipping or interlocking.

Unlike other joining processes, welding can only be applied to thermoplastics. Only thermoplastics possess sufficient rheological characteristics during melting (in the case of semi-crystalline materials) or softening (in the case of amorphous materials) to allow the interpenetration of surface layers required for bonding.

Welding does not involve the use of third-party materials in the bond, and enables two assembled parts to reconstitute a monolithic structure.

The bond between two welded parts has characteristics similar to those of the materials of which they are made.

Welding is a fast, controlled process that is used in many fields where a strong, durable mechanical bond is required on mass-produced parts.
