INTRODUCTION
This article describes the specific applications of face milling and circular milling, as well as the possible combinations of the two methods. Face milling is generally most effective for machining flat surfaces, while peripheral milling is best suited to grooves and open profiles of a certain length.
The applications described in 1 cover most milling operations. The milling cutter types shown are usually the first choice to be considered, their applications being specified in more detail in each of the corresponding chapters.
The type of machine available, its power and performance are the decisive criteria for choosing the type and size of face milling cutter. Given the range of existing machines, from small machining centers to very large gantry milling machines, and the equally wide power range of these machines, the first thing to determine is whether or not the machine used imposes any limitations on the operation envisaged. An estimate of the machine's performance and power will provide an indication of whether it is necessary to choose a smaller diameter or the appropriate type of geometry.
Stability is essential for good results. Is the machine sufficiently rigid? Is the spindle sufficiently robust, and are its bearings in good condition? Is the feed mechanism also in good condition, and are tools securely fixed?
On the other hand, if the machine is new or in good condition, and if the available power is not limited, then the aim should be to make the most of the possibilities available, and thus achieve high efficiency. Here too, an assessment of machine power and profitability criteria will help guide our choice.
