4. Conclusion

The approaches described here do not constitute an exhaustive list of possible approaches to the concept of durability of bonded joints. On the other hand, they are intended to reflect the state of the art in predicting the service life of bonded structures. While it may initially be possible to bond everything, the durability of bonded joints in service calls for a great deal of caution... and the quantitative assessment of the service life of a bonded joint, in a wet environment, is still an objective.

Research and case studies have shown for many years that, with careful consideration of the adhesive system, bonded assemblies are stable and durable over long periods of time in the presence of aggressive environments. For the most demanding applications (e.g. aerospace), highly complex, multi-stage surface treatments are required, at high cost, and high safety...
