8. Hull load limit

8.1 Conical and spherical shells of constant thickness

Equations 8.1 define the dimensionless force and moment variables used in the following calculations. Equation 8.2 is obtained from equation C.9 in Appendix C, based on the writing of the Von Mises criterion, neglecting the P/S terms.

Equations 8.3 and 8.4 introduce changes of variables. We then rewrite the equilibrium equations for axisymmetric hulls 6.1 to 6.3 as equations 8.5; 8.6 and 8.7.

Approximation: equation 8.8 is obtained by simplifying and then integrating (8.5 – (cos ϕ + 8.6 sin ϕ ) and 7.7 assuming
