2.1 Function and classification
The function of pneumatic directional control valves is to direct the flow of air between a source and a receiver. They direct pneumatic power between source and actuator, or actuator and return to atmosphere.
Valves are classified according to two functional characteristics: number of ports, number of positions.
Let be : X/Y, X number of ports, Y number of switching positions.
Some applications require the use of a three-position valve with a central neutral position. Three types of central position are generally used: either all connections are shut off, or the service connections are exhausted, or still supplied (figure
