3. Sizing: pressure resistance calculations

3.1 Allowable stress

The fundamental concept of permissible stress comes from the classical rules of strength of materials (cf. [B 5 020] , ref. [34] ), where a calculated stress is compared with the results of a simple tensile test on the metal used. The permissible stress is therefore the limit stress that the material can withstand, depending on its operating temperature and mechanical characteristics, and taking safety requirements into account.

To determine a permissible stress value, we therefore need to know: the characteristics of the metal and the safety factor adopted.
