1. Different types of turbines

1.1 Definitions

What is a gas turbine? It's not a modern invention, since the first idea dates back to Leonardo da Vinci; the first patent was filed in 1791, and the first gas turbine capable of producing mechanical energy was built in 1903.

The gas turbine is an engine made up of three main components (figures 1 a andb ):

  • a CR air compressor ;

  • a combustion chamber CC into which a liquid or gaseous fuel is introduced which, as it burns, partially consumes the air supplied by the compressor and raises the temperature of this air-combustion gas mixture, thereby increasing its volume;...
