Positive-displacement pumps can be divided into two subgroups depending on the nature of the mechanical movements involved:
reciprocating pumps derived from piston compressors ;
rotary displacement pumps, which avoid the mechanical problems of increasingly fragile connecting rods, and deliver a more even "gas flow". Some recent "dry" pumps (see § 1 ) have followed the same evolution...
