2. Automatic transmissions with inverters and planetary gearboxes

Automatic transmissions were born with the automobile ... As early as 1893, Benz equipped a small car with a planetary gearbox, as did Cadillac in 1902 (2 forward gears) and Ford in 1903 (Model A) and 1908 (Model T). The Wilson preselective gearbox from Daimler and Talbot, introduced in 1928, provided 4 forward gears, as did the French Cotal of 1934 (figure 1 ) fitted to Delage and Delahaye.
