5. Applications in self-cleaning materials
As early as the mid-1990s, the Japanese construction industry was looking into the potential use of photocatalytic materials to produce self-cleaning materials with aesthetic, pollution control and anti-fogging properties. It was only four years later that Europe initiated this type of research. In all cases, the photocatalyst used is titanium dioxide.
5.1 Principle of self-cleaning materials
Self-cleaning properties are based on two photo-induced properties: the first is the ability to oxidize organic soiling under the action of sunlight (photocatalytic reaction), and the second is due to photo-induced superhydrophilic properties that result in high surface wettability and enable inorganic or organic pollutants to be removed by water film formation....
